Danville, Virginia
The Confederate Soldiersâ Hospital, like the Confederate Subsistence Departmentâs Danville Depot, was in a former tobacco warehouse. Urilla stood up as a weary-looking young surgeon came into the makeshift waiting room. âDid he survive the surgery?â
âYes,â the doctor said. âHeâll eventually have full movement of the hip. That will permit him to walk with a prosthetic leg and a cane. Too bad they had to take the leg off above the knee. Having a functioning knee makes all the difference. If we could gotten him soonerâ¦â
âAnd his arm?â
âI was able to save it, but the damage to the muscle and connective tissue is extensive.â
âAre you saying his armâs paralyzed?â
âHe may regain limited use of it in time.â
âHow limited?â
âMuch of that depends upon him. If he exercises, he could regain eighty to ninety percent. If he coddles and protects it, the muscles will atrophy and the joints will calcify.â
âHeâll exercise,â Urilla said, brightening a bit.
âDonât expect too much,â the doctor warned. âThis is going to be life-altering for both of you.â
âWhen can I take him home?â
âLetâs wait a few days and talk again.â
âThe trains from here to Richmond are very crowded. Iâll need to make a reservation as soon as I can.â
The doctor thought a moment. âI promise that youâll have him home by Christmas, but I wonât be able to tell you anything else for a day or two.â
âThank you,â Urilla said.
âIâll be off duty soon. Could I take you to dinner?â
âWould it improve the care that my husband gets?â
He smiled. âIt might.â
âIâll wait here for you.â
